Summer  Lure Fishing For Pike an Exciting Sport

.Summer lure fishing for Pike sounds a great idea, esspecially in lovely warm sunny condition. Before i go any further please consider what i am about to explain.

Fishing for pike in the summer” always causes debate, which has more to do with water temperatures than with the time of year. When the water is lukewarm, pikes are more active swallowing baits and fight hard. However As the temperatures increase oxygen transport the capacity of the water decreases, and here lies the problem.

Spare a Thought for pike safety

Because the Pike can fight to exhaustion, it can take a long time to recover after capture, sometimes even causing mortality, especially if a Pike has been played for a long time, mishandled, or been kept out of the water. too much time. “

In winter, when the water is colder and the pike is more lethargic, there is usually no problem. For this reason, many people go so far as to say that pike should not be fished until the first frost, while others say that it is okay to fish for them all year round. I think it depends more on the water you fish than on the season.

For example, in a large reservoir, the water temperature will be much lower than that of a shallow lowland river, making it safer to fish there. I fight fish in the summer, but only in large reservoirs, glacial lakes and locks in the north, and still avoid the warmest of days.

As far as tactics go, for me it’s just lurebaits or fly fishing – of course you can catch live and dead bait in the summer, but Pike tends to devour bait at this time of year. This can lead to deep hooking, which is never a good thing, especially in the warmer months when the fish just don’t use this method of handling and you end up with only pike on their stomach.

If you use a lure baits or a fly, you will have direct contact with the fish the first time you hit it, so the risk of pike with deep hooks should be less. However, there is always a chance that you will be caught at this time of year. You should know what you are doing and have the right unlocking tools, including long needle nose pliers, side cutters, and bolt cutters to cut the hooks when needed

In conclusion, yes, you can fish for pike in the summer months, but keep in mind where you are fishing and what you are doing, the last thing anyone wants is a dead pike. If you’re not sure about Pike’s handling and unhooking, go to someone who knows what you’re doing first, and second, wait until the fall / winter months.

Pike fishing by dedicated fishermen is often only from October to March, this being the traditional pike season.

This gives the pike a break to spawn, but also reduces stress for the fish, which soon become stressed and waste after a hard fight in warm water where oxygen levels are lowered.

Pikes are most active in the warmer months and when they decide to feed, they often go into a frenzy and gorges on bait fish extremely quickly.

For this reason, we do not recommend using dead bait until the cooler winter months. This will produce fish that are quite often damaged.

Is your tackle strong enough?

Pike is considered a hardy and formidable predator, but they cannot survive well because they are lured deep or taken out of water for too long.

Mono must be at least  12lb and braid 20  lbbreaking strains and always use min quality wire traces. 26 pounds breaking strain and at least 18 inches in length

Get the fish in as quick as possible, remove hooks with forceps and release the pike as so, where appropriate, unhook the fish in the water without using the unhooking mat.

Following these pike fishing tips, and a few simple rules will ensure the pike will be returned unharmed to be caught another day.

Use Lures for Pike Fishing in the Summer

Fishing with lures is the only method of piking that is accepted during the warmer months.

This is a much more hook up friendly technique at this time of year when fish are more actively feeding in warm water where oxygen levels are reduced.

Fishing for pikes using spinners, lures and spoons is a great and interesting way to catch pike.

In the summer they will hit the bait very hard and give a fantastic fight to the goal.

When choosing a bait, you need to determine the pattern, type, and size that matches the water you are fishing.

You should consider the presence of tears, weeds, and stones to make sure you avoid getting caught.

Summer pike lure fishing important notes

Summer is the time when fishermen usually wrestle with fishing for pike. The reason is that the pike doesn’t like warmer water and tends to remain low for majority of the day.

Activity

When pike are active in the spring, the coming summer will change this. Pike are known to be less active in the summer due to the water temperature.

That being said, they still have to feed and still want to hunt. They only limit their active time to smaller parts of the day and stay low for the rest of the day.

But if you find the place where pike spend their day – they will still attack your cap. If you get close enough it is.

Best time of day

As the temperature gets higher, time of day plays a increasing role in pike fishing.

To increase the odds of catching pike, you want to stick to the basics – sunrise and sunset.

These twice a day become your best friends when you plan to fish. Pike are active during it and they are more likely to follow your spinners further and further.

Best Place To Start

I have already mentioned that summer is the time when fishermen struggle to catch the pike.

It is important to find suitable places to successfully land a pike.

During the summer, natural cover options increase, but water temperatures also increase.

This means that during the day, Pike chooses places that don’t get as hot as the sun.

If you are fishing in a boat, find the deepest parts of the lake or river where you are fishing.

There is a good chance that the big pike will be lurking there.

If you are hiking and fishing from the shore, remember the direction of the sun.

Stay away from direct sunlight and try to spot spots in the shade.

Once you find a section of the river or lake, look around for the natural cover that Pike wants to stay.

Pike Spinning Rod

Rod choice is important, it needs the ability to cast lures that weigh quite heavy on the stiffness to work the lure effectively.

A spinning rod of 8-9ft is perfect with a casting weight of 15-50 g gives a good variation for the selection of lures to cover the main fishing hot spots associated with fishing in the summer.

Below is a few quality affordable spinning rods to give you an idea. If you are considering using large heavier lures, a good strong lure rod for casting big baits is necessary.

Spinning reels are just as important and choosing the right one keeps everything balanced correctly. For the advanced lure casting angler using a good baitcasting reel loaded with braid is the best combination.

Choosing a big heavy reel with huge line capacity is totally unnecessary.

A medium sized fixed spool reel that has a line capacity of 175-200 metre of 12 lg mono is ideal.

The benefit of a fixed spool reel is the simplicity of tightening up the drag on top of the spool.

Drag should be preset before fishing to allow a hard fighting fish to take line on a surging run that pike will do several times when the hook is set in the fish.

Spinning Reels

Fixed spool reels are ideal and can be spooled with either mono, flurocarbon or braid. This small list will work just fine in your spinning set up for pike

Best Reel Line For Pike Spinning

Best choice of line has to be braid. This non stretch material keeps in direct contact with the lure and the fish when it strikes.

Braid is ultimately strong and line diameter much less than mono line. Massive advantage of this is that casting a lure will achieve much greater distance than mono.

If you have never used braid, there are a few pointers you need to know.

  • Standard knots used for mono will slip very quickly
  • Spool will need backing line because of the low diameter of braid.
  • A different knot is used to atach backing line to braid.
  • Abrasion resistant rod eyes are recommended to prevent braid cutting into the rings. Fuji eyes are a good choice.

How to tie knots when using braid

It does not matter if you are using the best tackle for spinning for pike, if your knots are not correct the whole experience is doomed. Losing good fish to inadequate knots is bad enough for the angler and can be fatal for the fish. Here is some knots you will need to learn that prevent a disaster happening.

Albright Knot Braid to Mono or flurocarbon

The Palamar knot for tying braid to swivel or hook, this is the most reliable oyt of all the knots associated with braid.

These two knots are the best for use with braid and cover all required for use with lure spinning method.

Braid breaking strain can be around 20lb as this has a small diameter and casting accuracy is increased dramatically.

End tackle could not be any easier. I prefer to tie a size 8 link swivel on the end of the braided line. This allows you to attach a wire trace in seconds. This is extremely useful after catching a pike were the trace can become bent up in the fight and also if a trailing hook attaches itself to the landing net.

This allows a simple unhooking of the pike being able to take the rod away safely.

Best Locations for Summer Lure Fishing For Pike

Firstly, it has to be a river and you will not find better sport than a weir pool. Good oxogen levels is were a lot of all speices of fish will lay in the warm weather.

I have caught as many as 12 pike in a session fishing almost beneath a weir.

The abundance of bait fish are one of the huge factors for feeding pike to gather in these areas.

Hotspots below a wier to spin for pike in the Summer

A prime spot to spin for pike is a wierpool like this on a large river. Here i have circled the hotspots to target that i would have great confidence in results. Not only pike of all sizes but large perch often show up and the occasional zander.

Top 5 Lures For Summer Pike Fishing

Opting for lures that run close to the surface if the water is the way to go, even take a few lures that can be worked on the surface too. large shoals of baitfish congregate were this is a good pace in the water, for this reason wier pools are a great choice to target. On lakes fish the shallows close to the drop off or look for weed beds to run a surface lure across the top. Crankbaits that are shallow divers can also be used in the late Summer.

The Whopper plopper

When fishing weir pools the first lure i choose is a surface is one that trolls the surface. This is because i initially do not know the depth.

The slow water patches in between the white water runs generally suggest deep holding pools. Running a surface lure first gives a safe option to sour through all pikey looking areas allowing you to fish right against the weir.

The main surface lure i use for this approach is a Whopper Plopper as it really makes a disturbance and noise that draws attention very quickly from large predators.

Best results is to use a fast retrieve with sudden jerks of an escaping bait fish. Takes are explosive sometimes resulting into the pike leaving the water completely thrashing its head side to side. Can really be a heart stopping moment and pulsating way to hook up a predator.

The whopper comes in different sizes and colours. Bear in mind the pike looks upwards so dark colours on dull days is how anything would appear looking up like a black shadow.

In bright days a bright colour, yellow and green seems to be a big favourite in my experience.

Taking a 8 lb zander from the surface at Holte Fleet weir on the river Severn which is almost unheard of with this light sensitive fish.

Yo-Zuri Mag Darter

The Mag Darter Minnow is an excellent pike catching lure for flowing water. Best results is to cast the darter Minnow across the flow of the river.

Retrieve quick to begin to pull the floating lure down a few feet. Then wind slow and stop and then jerk to create the appearance of an injured fish. Alternating retrieve techniques will drive pike into a savage attack.

Darter comes in a few different sizes and larger sizes work well.

This lure is intended for sea fishing with Bass the main target species but is used to catch all predatory fish.

Please note this lure is a sea fishing bait and is armed with stainless steel hooks. Change the stainless steel treble hooks to bronze freshwater hooks and keep the stainless hooks for the sea.

If a big fish has a break off with the lure left in the fish, bronze hooks will rust and cruble so the fish will survive. Stainless hooks will cause a slow death for the fish.

Weight:27 gram

Length: 12.5 cm

Action: Floating Diver

The Darter can be cast into the wind with ease. A variety of retrieves can be employed from twitching, jerking and straight retrieves with an occasional pause. Do not be shy to wind the in fast bursts, all these methods work incredibly well.

keep the rod pointing straight at the lure and with short flicks lift the rod upwards about 1 ft while retrieving at a steady speed. this creates the natural movement of a swimming frog. Pike takes can be explosive, seeming like it came from nowhere!

Unhooking a Pike

Before i talk about unhooking a Pike, the first thing before even going out pike fishing you need an unhooking mat.

Pike protection is imperitive to safeguard this prehistoric super predator that we all enjoy catching.

Laying all caught pike on the unhooking mat prevents injury to the fish as they thrash about furiously for the first 10-20 seconds on land.

Landing Pike

Landing a Pike with your net is quite simply. Keeping the front of the net submerged in the water and steadily play the fish.

When the Pike tires pull the fish towards the net keeping the rod high in their. When the Pike is ready as it calms down pull the fish over the net.

At this point its the tail end of the fish you will look at. Once the tail end is over the net lift the net till its just out of the surface of the water.

Do not try to lift the net out of the water with the fish inside. Pike are heavy and will destroy the net pole.

Instead pull the landing backwards till you can grab the net were its connected to the pole.

Now you can lift the fish in the net and place the fish and net on the unhooking mat.

Unhooking a lure caught Pike

Prior to even consider pike fishing, there are a few things you need to safely remove hooks out of a pike:

A good unhooking mat, a large landing net, some long nose pliers and a set of croppers, known as side cutters, in case you are in trouble guess and have to chop or track the hooks.

Sure, it is also important that you always use a wire trace when fishing, otherwise you run the risk of being bitten off and leaving your hooks in a fish.

To help you further with the right fish handle equipment hit the link!

Tools required:

  • Long nose pliers
  • Side cutters cutters
  • unhooking mat
  • Large landing net

Pike hooked up on a lure are more often than not caught in the front of the mouth. This is a huge benefit when it comes to unhooking the fish.

Keep the rod and the main line out of reach of your unhooking mat gently tighten the main line by hand to the hooked area.

This allows you to have some idea were the hooks reside.

Roll the fish on its back and at this point a cool damp rag can be placed over the fishes belly to help keep the Pike calm.

Use a free hand and follow the gill plates to the chinof the fish. Here is where you can put a finger just inside and lift the jaw open to reveal the hooks.

Keeping the jaws open take the long nose pliers and grip the impaled hook near to the bend and twist out the hook.

Repeat this process if more than one hook is imbeded into the fish.

Once all the hooks are out get the lure and line out of the way.

This is ready to photograph if you want or time to return the fish to the water quicktly.

Keeping the Pike in the net carry it to the waterside. Keeping the fish in the net lower into the water and allow several minute for the fish to recover.

Gently lower the end of the net and allow the fish to swim out. Sometimes you may need to help the fish to find his way.

The fish will swim away and everything is good.

Perfect day lure fishing for pike. Catch some hard fighting fish that show no mercy. Unhook and take care of the fish. Release quickly in Summer.

Happy angler and healthy fish this is a partnership that should never be broken.👍
